Misconceptions about teeth whitening

Who doesn’t want a bright, sparkling smile? It makes you look great and projects self-confidence. As teeth vary in colour from pale grey to a darker yellow, teeth whitening is a great solution for a radiant smile!

Whitening can be safe and effective under a dentist’s supervision. However, there are a number of misconceptions about whitening that may be misleading to many consumers.

1. Teeth whitening can be done on all types of teeth.
FALSE. Teeth whitening can only be done on the enamel of natural healthy teeth. Treatment will have no effect on veneers, composite fillings, crowns and bridges.

2. Everyone can benefit from teeth whitening.
FALSE. Teeth whitening is contraindicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tobacco use is prohibited during whitening treatments, because peroxide (contained in the bleaching agent) increases the carcinogenic risk of tobacco.

3. Teeth whitening is painful.
FALSE. Patients who receive a whitening treatment may experience temporary dental sensitivity. These effects disappear a few days after the end of the treatment.

4. Teeth whitening is permanent.
FALSE. The effects of whitening can last from six months to two years. For smokers and patients who consume certain products (coffee, tea, red wine, etc.), the effects are shorter lasting. Touch-ups may be necessary to maintain the colour of your teeth.
