A holiday that’s as fun for adults as it is for kids, Halloween is an occasion to dress up in creative costumes, adorn the house with spooky lights and decorations and, of course, eat candy! After all, what would Halloween be without an abundance of candy? With the festivities fast approaching, we wanted to pass on a few tips about protecting your own and your children’s teeth.
When you or your child eat sweets, the bacteria found in plaque mixes with the sugar to produce an acid that attacks tooth enamel. Brushing your teeth and flossing helps remove the bacteria that form this acid. It’s therefore always recommended to brush your teeth after eating sugary foods in order to limit the acid attack on your teeth.
Other tooth-protecting tips
- Eat candy at meal times, as there is more saliva in the mouth at this time, which will help neutralize the tooth-damaging acid.
- Avoid sticky candies that can get lodged between teeth.
- Rinse your mouth with a glass of water. The water will help wash away some of the sugar.
- Eat or drink a dairy product after the candy. Dairy products reduce acid levels in the mouth.
