Wisdom teeth

Tout savoir sur les dents de sagesse.

The wisdom teeth are the third molars, located at the very back of the mouth, behind the other teeth. Wisdom teeth generally appear in early adulthood. However, in many cases they lack sufficient space to erupt. As a result, they become impacted (trapped in the surrounding tissue), are unable to fully erupt or erupt at a bad angle, making them harder to maintain.

Wisdom tooth removal may be proposed to remedy the following problems:

  • Tooth crowding
Insufficient space in the mouth for the wisdom teeth (even if they erupt at the correct angle).
  • Swelling, redness and pain
Their position makes the wisdom teeth more vulnerable to the proliferation of bacteria in the space between the tooth and the gums, causing these symptoms.
  • Possible cavities
Just like other teeth, wisdom teeth are not immune to the bacteria that can cause cavities. Their location at the very back of the mouth makes them more difficult to maintain. Consequently, they are more cavity-prone.
