Everything you need to know about dentures

Dentures, sometimes called “false teeth”, have greatly evolved over the years.  Now made of acrylic, they artificially replace your teeth and gums in a very natural way.

Have you lost all or part of your teeth due to an accident, illness, or poor oral hygiene?  Our denturists and other professionals can recommend the right denture for you and give you back your smile.

What do dentures do?

First of all, they allow you to properly chew food, correct the sagging of the jaw and mouth while improving your smile.

They also facilitate the pronunciation of certain consonants that require the tongue to rest on the teeth, as with the “d” and “t” sounds, among others.

A few questions about dentures

Many questions from clients come up about wearing dentures.  So before we tell you more, we thought we would share with you some of the most common queries:

How much does a denture cost?

Costs vary from person-to-person since they are based on individual needs.  This is why it is essential to consult a denturist to find the best solutions for you.

Why does my mouth change as I get older?

With age, people often experience bone loss in the jaws and receding gum lines. It is also good to know that these changes are accelerated when some of your teeth are missing. The space created in the gums and the lack of stimulation of the toothless bones speed up this process.

Will my dentures hold up well?

Follow-up appointments allow the denturist to adjust the comfort of your dentures and preserve their aesthetic form and proper function. Over time, adjustments will be made if, for example, your jawbone or gums recede. We can then restore stability to your denture using relining or rebasing techniques.

Will I be able to properly articulate with my dentures?

After a normal period of adaptation, which varies from one person to another, there is no doubt that you will be able to express yourself naturally!  To do this, you can practice by reading aloud and speaking more slowly.  This will help avoid that sudden jaw movements lift your denture and make it “slam” shut.

Two types of removable acrylic dentures

Partial plate

Do you have one or more missing teeth?  The removable partial acrylic plate could meet your needs.  These plates, sometimes called a “bridge”, help with chewing, speaking and, of course, enhancing that friendly smile.

The partial plate rests on the gums and is anchored to the remaining teeth with clasps.

Its base is made of acrylic resin, with or without metal.  This type of plate is very easy to care for and can be made quickly from precise impressions and measurements.  It provides great comfort.

Full plate

Have you lost all your teeth on the upper or lower jaw?  Or has a major deterioration of your teeth forced dental professionals to extract them?  The removable acrylic full plate would be just right for you.

Rest assured, today’s dentures are very natural looking and, since they are constructed over a span of several appointments, they are comfortable and fit perfectly in your mouth.
