Tooth decay is one of the most widespread diseases in the world. The presence of a sticky film composed of bacteria called dental plaque on the teeth is the cause of cavities. When the bacteria in this plaque come into contact with sugars, they produce acids that gradually attack tooth enamel.

What Is a Dental Cavity and How Does It Form?

People get cavities and experience tooth decay when plaque and tartar build up, allowing the bacteria present in dental plaque to produce acids that attack the enamel. This erosion creates a cavity in the tooth, weakening its structure.

A thorough visual examination will reveal the early signs of decay, but X-rays are often necessary to identify lesions that are invisible to the naked eye. If a cavity isn’t detected in time, it can progress and reach the deeper layers of the tooth, potentially leading to tooth loss. Fortunately, consulting a dentist and taking preventive measures can help avoid many of these issues.

What Are the Symptoms of Dental Cavities and Tooth Decay?

It’s rare to observe symptoms when tooth decay has been present for only a short time.

However, if it persists for a long time, signs of a cavity may include:

  1. A toothache;

  2. Sensitivity to heat, cold, or pressure;

  3. Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

    Once again, a thorough visual examination will usually reveal minor problems before they worsen, including the appearance of cavities on the tooth surface, which could reach the tooth pulp and nerves, causing more intense pain if the area is affected by decay.

    Dental Cavity Treatment

    Treatment for tooth decay involves removing the affected part of the tooth to preserve dental health. Once the lesion is removed, the dentist can propose different treatment options to restore the remainder of the tooth. These procedures are performed in the dental office with suitable materials to support the restoration.

    Composite Resin Tooth Filling

    Composite resin is a material used to fill and restore teeth. It has the advantage of imitating the structure and color of the tooth naturally, offering an aesthetic alternative to silver amalgam fillings.

    This solution for tooth decay is applied and shaped during a procedure performed by your dentist. When the damage is limited, the dentist removes the affected portion before applying the composite resin, which is then hardened using a light, and subsequently adjusted and polished.

    Amalgam Filling

    Used in dentistry for over a century, amalgam is composed primarily of a mixture of silver, tin, and copper. This mixture produces a silver-grey “paste” that hardens once it’s placed.

    While less aesthetic than composite resin, amalgam still offers great durability. However, when dental plaque accumulates around amalgam restorations, the risk of cavities remains, particularly in the pits and fissures of the teeth.

    Additionally, this material tends to expand over time, putting pressure on the tooth walls, which can lead to cracks and even tooth fractures. This is why it is increasingly less recommended and used by dentists.

    Ceramic Inlay

    The ceramic inlay is also an interesting solution for repairing and stopping the progression of decay. More durable than composite fillings, it provides harmonious results while strengthening the tooth structure.

    More closely resembling the enamel of a natural tooth, it allows the repaired tooth to regain its original strength. The dentist may also recommend this option when multiple tooth surfaces are affected or in the case of a deep cavity.

    This straightforward procedure involves removing the decayed area, then taking an impression of the prepared tooth to create a precisely fitted inlay.

    When decay is detected early, the enamel can repair itself, but in cases of advanced deterioration, this restoration is an option alongside other dental care. Once fabricated, the ceramic inlay is bonded onto the tooth to offer protection.
