Mouth cancer is a disease characterized by abnormal cellular growth in the mouth, on the lips or tongue or in the throat. This form of cancer is more common in men than women and usually develops after the age of 40.

You can’t always detect the signs of mouth cancer yourself. This is why it is essential to visit your dentist for an examination at least once a year. Your dentist is trained to identify the first signs of mouth cancer. It’s called early detection. However, in addition to regular visits, be sure to see your dentist if you notice any of the following:

  • A lesion on your lips, the inside of your cheek or on the gums that bleeds easily or that isn’t healing
  • A lump on your lip or in your mouth or throat
  • White or red spots on your gums, tongue or the inside of your cheeks
  • A loss of sensation in your mouth
  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  • A change in the tone of your voice

Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking are two factors that can lead to the development of mouth cancer.

Don’t hesitate to consult your Lapointe Dental Centre professional for advice or information, or to request a cancer screening exam.
